COME ON!
13/18 seats were empty.
Not that I’m complaining, because I had all of the legroom plus an entire overhead.
When I booked my flight, it would have cost $70 dollars to book an economy plus seat. That’s almost what it costs to fly in garbage first class on something like an EMB-170 or CRJ-700. When I checked in, it would have cost me $40. Now? Economy plus in the first row and in the aisle for $20.
You mother fuckers know no one is buying those seats at that price, especially when 2/3 of the plane is filled with basic economy passengers that can’t even select seats. Why do we have to go through this every damn time ? I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t able to get a front aisle seat for $20 or less.

$20? Are you flying from one end of the landing strip to the other?

Well you might not pay that $70, but some sucker might. I tend to assume they’ve got a pretty good handle on what pricing scheme brings in the most money. I’m actually more surprised they even bothered lowering it to $20, at some point it’s probably better to just have the goodwill of upgrading some frequent flier (and of course the opportunity to sell it to someone last minute) .

I was asked if I wanted to meet one of the top brass of united here in Mexico.
I'm still uncertain if I do, I feel like I'd be wasting their time.

PHL-ORD. I don’t really need the legroom, so $20 is pretty much as much as I’ll pay to be able to spread out.

It seems to be all algorithm based. I just rechecked and my same seat would now cost $50. But if you just wait, it always drops. I’ve even upgraded seats just before boarding started.

I fell for that on delta but my employer is paying for my flight. I’m screwed if I get a window seat. I’m 6’ 4” and have a 36” inseam. I actually don’t fit if I sit with my knees forward.

United is great though, especially after they banned carry ons with basic fares.

That’s fair. No matter what, I’ll always pay extra to have an aisle seat.

That’s not quite what I was getting at. I wasn’t aware you could fly for $20

I pay for the extra leg room so I’m the sucker, but it gives a decent buffer for my child. He doesn’t kick, but even if he wanted to, it’s too far from him. Not a risk I want to take, making someone else flight shitty.

I fly enough that I’ve developed seating preferences. Isle seat towards the back so I know there is room for my carry on and close to the toilet so I can go quickly if needed. Flight attendants seem to treat the back of the buss nicer too. I get free drinks and extra cookies.

I’m not sure it would even get you that far. Aren’t the fees to even get to a gate pretty expensive for the airlines?

He’s just talking about the extra fee for economy plus on top of the ticket price. That’s the latest scam they’re running, along with “ basic economy".

I mean, there’s being surly. And then there’s just being an abusive bunch of assholes.
And then there’s United Airlines.

That’s a fair take.
That doesn’t make me any less happy about their carry on policy, though. They’re the only airline that does that right.

It’s a fine policy, but it does cause issues with flight searches, since it makes it harder to directly compare prices (which I’m sure was much of the point).
I did like Continental, but things have definitely gone downhill since the merger (for a while flights in to / out of Continental hubs seemed to be better, but whatever edge they had has dissipated at this point).

That makes sense. I’m still happy about the policy, though. Charging for carry ons has been a long time coming and competing with people trying to avoid paying bag fees to bring my reasonably-sized carry on on board is my only source of anxiety when flying. I don’t think I’ve ever flown American without either being forced to check or just making it under the wire.

It’s demand-based nickel-and-diming. Just like how the prices for the same seat on the same flight will vary depending on the time, day of the week, and how far in advance you book them.
They use software and algorithms and stuff to figure out how to make the most $$$ possible off of every person.

United has the nicest domestic flight attendendants, but then again, I’m adorable, so everyone is nice to me. Doesn’t change the fact that I frequently get free booze.

It’s not flying directly, it’s not being able to move around for long periods of time. I’m the same during long movies, I can’t sit still for more than an hour and a half or so.
I actually never really had an issue until my honeymoon. The day we were to leave Kauai, I told my wife I wasn’t flying. We ended up making a pit stop at the ER and I just told them they were going to be +1 homeless person if they didn’t give me something to get me on the plane. 4 Valium later I giggled myself to sleep on the runway.

This is why I like having status on American and getting those seats for free. And since all of my flights were for work, I never paid for any of it to begin with. Being able to choose the exit row seats with some extra legroom is honestly even better than flying first class to me.

Fair. But as far as I’m concerned, flight attendants are like admins. As long as you remember that they can fuck up your day on a whim and you better tread softly, you’ll be fine.

The only benefit to traveling so much is being platinum on AA. The food sucks, the FAs and gate agents still are surly, the employees generally are unhelpful, but free upgrades to most places and free booze (which I’ve learned to take advantage of on my trips back home by ubering to the airport! ).
Speaking of surly AA employees, the FA last night forgot to secure the drink supply before takeoff. The poor bastard in 1C got soaked with multiple juice bottles hitting the floor and splashing up. Then when he asked for some napkins from her, she asked whether he was splashed. When he responded that he got soaked, she snottily responded, “It WAS an ACCIDENT, sir.” I wanted to respond, “No, an accident is when you accidentally spill something. Not securing the galley is you not doing your job.” But instead, I wrapped my backpack in the blanket because the floor had juice running everywhere and just waited for my booze to arrive.

I always give the FAs so much credit for dealing with the shit they deal with and not murdering everybody on board. It seems like a stressful job, working long hours, flying all the time, dealing with all of the delays and cancellations full time. And then on top of that dealing with customers and just bad luck. I have always had more problems with other passengers rather than the crew.
